The Measure of Success

Our society places a lot of emphasis on being successful.  We are all trying to be the best spouse, parent, employee, athlete, etc.  The list could go on and on.

Miriam Webster defines success as the degree or measure of succeeding; favorable or desired outcome; and the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence.

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.”

Maya Angelou

What is your definition of success?

  • The size of your bank account?
  • The letters showing degrees after your name on your signature?
  • The title you hold at work?
  • The status you have in your community?

Each of us needs to examine our priorities and determine what will make us feel successful.  Many times we think we know what will make us happy, only to achieve it and realize we are still wanting.

Find your passion in life.  Many times we go to college and get a degree only to find out we are not satisfied in our chosen career.  If you do not have passion for your job, you will not be satisfied no matter how many thousands of dollars you may make.

In order to find your passion, you should examine your natural gifts.  Many times these go hand-in-hand.  Working with your God-given talents will not even feel like you’re working.  You will love what you are doing and be good at it because it is natural to you.

This is not to say that you won’t work hard.  But the truth is you will not even notice the time because you are enjoying your work.  This makes me think of professional golfers.  How great would it be to spend your workdays on a golf course?  These are men and women taking full advantage of their talents and making it their career.  I know to get to the professional level, there were a lot of hours of training and practice, but I bet most of them would never say it was “work.”

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”

Herman Cain

The happiest people are the ones who never stop growing and trying new things.  Whatever your measure of success, it is never too late to get started on attaining it.

Start by downloading inspirational/motivational audio-books from your library.  Listen whenever you have time:

  • While driving
  • While walking for exercise
  • At lunchtime
  • While cleaning the house

Attainment of success is an ongoing process that should be constantly evolving in our lives.  I hope you take this opportunity to help yourself become successful in whatever you desire.
