In my younger years I was always happy that I had perfect 20/20 vision. I never had to worry about eyeglasses as did so many of my siblings and classmates.
Unfortunately, as most of us experience, when I was in my 40’s I began to notice that I couldn’t read in bed as easily as before. Then I couldn’t even read my computer at work as I used to. I had to face the fact that my eyesight was dwindling. Hence, I ended up with over-the-counter “cheaters” for reading. Suddenly I could see clearly again.

As with the physical ability to see the words on the page, we also sometimes need “cheaters” to see the vision of the future we were meant to have.
To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
So often, we limit our lives to the careers, locations, or lifestyles of the people closest to us. We do not take the time to determine what we would like our own particular life to look like.
If most people in our family work in a big city, for a huge firm, we may follow that path without even realizing that our perfect life looks very different than that. Maybe we would like to live in a different state or country. Maybe we would like to develop our own business and we don’t personally know anyone else who has done this.

Don’t be afraid to put on a pair of “cheaters” for your life. Ask yourself the tough questions.
- If I could have any job, what would it be?
- What will bring me the most happiness?
- If I could do anything, what would I do?
- If I could live anywhere, where would I live?
- Who would I want to live with?
Next, create a picture in your mind of the answers to these questions. Visualize yourself in this perfect job, living in your perfect home in the perfect location, and with the people you want in your life.
Keep this image present every morning when you wake up and every night when you go to sleep.
Next step is doing the work to make it happen. Don’t give up on your dream. Figure out a way to become the person you want to be; to have the life you want to live. Create that life to allow your dream to become a reality.
“Do not wait; the time will never be ‘just right.’ Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.”
George Herbert
Perseverance is the key to success. Do not give up on yourself. Do not take off the “cheaters” and go back to seeing your life with limited vision.
