I am the type of person that generally does not do things spontaneously, I’m a planner. I like to schedule my activities and appointments on my calendar and plan my time accordingly. My husband, however, tends to be more of a spontaneous person. He doesn’t like to plan things too far in advance but prefers to see how he is feeling and take it from there.
Planners usually think that they are more productive and efficient in accomplishing specific activities. Planners also feel that in preparing ahead for challenges gives them the ability to reduce the number of potential problems that may arise.
Adventure is just bad planning.Roald Amundsen
People who are spontaneous tend to be more easygoing as they don’t spend their time trying to schedule and plan everything they do. Consequently, they can seem to have a reputation for enjoying the moment and taking things as they come. However, spontaneity can be costly when little things not accounted for blow up into big challenges that could have been avoided beforehand.
A lot of people like to adapt their day-to-day strategies on the needs of the moment. But there are quite a few people who have a strong preference for planning ahead because of its perceived benefits. Here are some benefits of each.
Benefits of Planning:
- Helps you organize your time
- Get the most out of your resources
- Figure out the best possible way to achieve the best possible results
- Attention paid to details
Benefits of Being Spontaneous:
- Can be more fun
- More flexible approach to life
- Uses your creative side
- Willing to try new things
The thing best remembered that even if you are a planner, there are times you will need to be spontaneous. For example, if your friend, relative, or coworker has a sudden need for your attention, you will want to be spontaneous and give them the care they need at that time, even if something else is planned. Being flexible will show this person that you care enough to give them your time.
Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.Lao Tzu
While both approaches have their own unique set of pros and cons, it makes sense to adapt your approach depending on the situation. For instance, at a party, it’s okay to let your hair down and go with the flow. At a business meeting, you will make a better impression if you are well-planned with your presentation. In all cases, it’s wise to allow for a mix of both approaches so that not only can you prepare for the worst but you can also expect and enjoy the best.

Love the take on both planning and being spontaneous. There are benefits to both. I’m probably more of the spontaneous mind, while my wife is more the planner. Thank goodness for her in regards to me. I’d be a mess. Great points in the post. Thank you for sharing.
